Sailing Skinny Like Jesus

“Let not life happen to me, but let me happen to life”

I like to skinny sail. Shocking I know. There’s something about standing without attire at the very front of a sailboat in a strong wind and yelling as loud as you can. The wind and the waves are pushing you here and there (the boat here and there), but instead of being pushed around you are telling the wind to so and so.

Here’s a similar senerio: The sailing disciples were in a big storm with Jesus sleeping below. They go down to wake him up, and then here comes Jesus wearing nothing more than His boxers (a bit more holy than I) and He yells at the wind and the waves.  Utterly brilliant, I can so relate.

Jesus happened to life and life gave way for Jesus.  Jesus said, we would do even greater things than these.  Oh to live even half as confident.  Skinny sailing is as close as I get.

“Live like you’re going to die”

This was inspired when I found a lump beneath my ear this morning. I’m hoping it’s a spider bite.  But it made me ponder for a moment - if I was on my way out how would I live right now? I think I would be much more focused on serving others especially my wife and kids. I think I’d also go to Portugal to learn bull fighting and pick up knitting.

Proverbs 7 New Virtual Version (NVV)

Proverbs 7:1 My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. 2 Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. 3 Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart.

4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin, 5 That they may keep you from the immoral internet woman, From the seductress who flatters with her provocative pictures. The Crafty Harlot

6 For at the window of my computer I looked through my portal, 7 And saw among the simple, I perceived among the youths, A young man devoid of understanding, 8 Surfing along the internet highway near her corner; And he clicked the path to her home page 9 In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night.

10 And there a woman met him, With the attire of a harlot, and a sultry face. 11 She was shameless and rebellious, Her virtual feet would not stay at home. 12 At times she was online, advertising on the busy sites, Lurking at every corner click.

13 So she caught his glance and ensnared him; With an impudent face she seemed to say to him: 14 “I have a peaceful private space; Today I’m here just for you. 15 I am right here to meet you, Diligently to seek your fascination, And I have found you. 16 I have spread my bed with tapestry, Colored coverings of Ralph Lauren linen. 17 Imagine my perfumed bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, drink your fill of love until morning; Delight yourself with my images of love. 19 For your wife cannot see what you are doing; She is upstairs in her room; 20 She is asleep until morning, and won’t interrupt you.”

21 With her enticing photos she caused him to yield, With her curvaceous hips she seduced him. 22 Immediately he clicked after her, as a chicken goes to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the electric chair, 23 Till Cupids arrow struck his liver. As an addict craves the killing drug, He did not know it would cost his life.

24 Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: 25 Do not let your eyes / your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not surf past her sites; 26 For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. 27 Her home page is the way to hell, Descending to the chambers of death.

Quote of the Future

"The future is behind you, when God is before you."

I was thinking about how it’s easy to look to our past and say "It was all in God’s hand, God has carried us through" but we find it so tough to say the same about the future.  Yet God is just as much in control of our future as he is of our past.  We don’t usually worry about the past neither do we have grounds to worry about the future.
