Grey’s Dentistry

November 2, 2006

An original sitcom idea:

The scene would be a dentists office. The drama would be surrounding cavities, root canals and basic check-ups. Every now and then some wisdom teeth could be removed for graphic appeal.

The casting would be a about 5 or 6 interns, just out of dentistry school.

In the opening episode the interns are immediately thrown into the fray. The action begins when one of the pucky guy interns mistakenly does a root canal on an old man’s dentures. Meanwhile, outside the dentists office one of the prissy gal interns has been assigned the job of washing patients cars while their teeth get cleaned, as a clever marketing scheme.

Each episode climax’s with at least one very bad tooth mishap as the interns eat, breathe and sleep their dentistry initiation.

Grey’s Dentistry came to me out of the blue as a name for the sitcom. I don’t know what ‘Grey’ could mean, or why I thought of ‘Grey’.

Undiluted Grace

November 1, 2006

Today, I was feeling slightly overwhelmed by the bar of perfection pointing out my imperfections. The prayer slipped out, “God have grace on my imperfections.” As I was contemplating my prayer I realized that I was essentially saying, “God, it’s too difficult to be perfect; please have Grace on me so I can remain imperfect.”

Is God’s Grace my place of retreat and a salve for my battle wounds? If we are looking for that kind of grace, it will not bring freedom, but only serve as an alternative to condemnation, making us feel better.

A different prayer: “God have Grace on me to be the person you want me to be”, is asking for a Grace that gives Joy and Freedom and points us in the direction of trading our imperfections for His perfection. Hebrews 10 bluntly puts it in perspective.

Heb 10: 26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people." 31It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
